About the museum
The Heimathaus stands on Kirchring, the oldest core of Verl, in the immediate vicinity of the former St. Anna Chapel. In the 16th century, cottagers settled around this first church of the Verl region, pursuing crafts and trade alongside some farming. The present Heimathaus was also such a cottager’s holding; it is first mentioned in records in 1615.
For a long time the house was run as an inn. After the Schroeder family took over the property in 1863, spirits and cigars were also produced here. As a commercial building, it was converted several times and gradually fell into disrepair over time.
In 1983 the municipality of Verl took over the house and renovated it extensively together with the local history association. It opened as a Heimathaus on 1 September 1986; a beam inscription in the entrance still recalls its varied uses. Since then the association has presented exhibitions here on settlement history, the Verl farmsteads, old crafts and the World Wars, maintains a local history library, and regularly invites visitors to half-timbered house concerts, readings and art exhibitions.
