About the museum

Miele was founded in 1899 by Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann in Herzebrock as a centrifuge factory and, owing to its rapid growth, soon moved to Gütersloh. From the production of milk separators and butter churns grew an internationally active household appliance manufacturer that still shapes Gütersloh today.

The museum at the company headquarters on Carl-Miele-Straße tells this corporate history through appliances and documents. Alongside washing machines, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers, it displays products with which the company at times served entirely different markets: handcarts, bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles – two-wheeler production helped Miele get through the difficult 1930s, among other periods. The most valuable piece is considered to be the only surviving example of the Miele K 3 automobile.

In early 2018 the exhibition, covering around 1,000 square meters, was redesigned to plans by interior architecture students from Detmold, including the entrance area. Since then, stations such as a rotunda of vacuum cleaner models since 1927, a 1960s kitchen, a wall of historic advertising and a vehicle display have structured the tour. The Miele Experience Center with current appliances is right next door.
