About the museum
The Heimathof lies on the "Galgenberg" at the southern edge of Emsbüren and is cared for by the Heimatverein Kirchspiel Emsbüren (local heritage society of the Emsbüren parish), founded in 1968. Its core is the main house, a Low German two-post house from 1766, which was expanded in 1834, acquired in 1973 by a family from the Osnabrück region and rebuilt here.
Eight half-timbered buildings have now been reconstructed true to the original: alongside the main house, a functional bread oven house from 1743, a barn with a forge, a sheep shed, a wagon shed, a hayloft house, a barn with clay-wattle infill and a tool shed. The ensemble shows how rural people lived and worked in the 18th century. Hobby blacksmiths work regularly in the forge, and in the bread oven house bread and Butterkuchen (butter cake) are baked for groups.
In 2002 a roughly 2,000 m² medicinal herb garden with around 200 medicinal plants, shrubs and trees was created on the south slope, together with partner municipality Losser. There is also an insect-friendly cottage garden. In 2017 the access path was re-paved barrier-free with subsidy funds.
