About the museum
The Heimatverein Spelle was founded in 1974 to preserve local customs and old tools. When the Hölscher farm, whose beam inscription refers to the year 1738, was relocated in 1994, the site passed to the municipality. The association took over the large barn built in 1943 in timber-frame construction and, over several years of work, converted it into an exhibition hall. After about five years of construction and more than 6,000 volunteer hours, the museum barn was completed in 1999.
Since then it has displayed an extensive collection of agricultural tools and machines from the Spelle area, ranging from hand tools and early motorized machines to modern farm machinery for field work, harvesting and fodder production. In a workshop of its own, volunteers set up an old clog-maker's shop and a complete forge. The collection also includes dairy farming equipment and machines used for peat cutting in the "Speller Dose" moor area. A working grain mill is in operation in the small barn.
The museum is one of several buildings run by the association: it also operates the Heimathaus at the Wöhlehof, the "Alte Schule" from 1909, which serves as an archive with a model of the village around 1940, and the former fire station with rural household items. The museum barn is listed in the Museumsverzeichnis Niedersachsen und Bremen.
