The exhibition asks why people collect and what collections reveal about their collectors. On show are loans from the local population, ranging from stamps to egg cups to crisp packets.
About the museum
The Museum Abtsküche is housed in a former rural school from 1908 in the Abtsküche recreation area. The listed building was converted and extended by the city of Heiligenhaus as part of EUROGA 2002plus. The operator is the Geschichtsverein Heiligenhaus (history society), founded in 1970 with around 20 members; today it has about 300.
The permanent exhibition "Leben und Arbeiten in Heiligenhaus zwischen Tradition und Moderne" shows how households and everyday life looked between 1900 and the 1950s: a historic kitchen-living room, a laundry room and pantry, a general store (Kolonialwarenladen), an old classroom, a shoemaker's and saddler's workshop, and a historic tavern. Another area is devoted to the beginnings of the Heiligenhaus lock industry (Schlossindustrie) and to town history.
Alongside this, the museum uses its rooms for changing cultural-history exhibitions and for events such as museum festivals, markets, concerts and dialect evenings. It belongs to the MuseumsLandschaft Abtsküche, which also includes the Feuerwehrmuseum (fire brigade museum), the environmental education center and the Wald- und Wassermuseum (forest and water museum).
The location on the historic circular trail and on the nature trail into the Vogelsangbach valley makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the "Paradies" recreation area.
