About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Kettwig is a small local history museum in the newer part of the former Kettwig town hall on the market square. The town hall itself goes back to a neoclassical older building from 1830, which originally served as a cloth factory.

The museum was founded in 1990 by the association "Kettwiger Museums- und Geschichtsfreunde", which for decades gathered exhibits and archive material. In December 2022 the association dissolved. Since then, the committee "Geschichte und Museum" of the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Kettwig e. V. (local heritage and transport association) has continued to run the house, likewise with a volunteer team.

The collection focuses on Kettwig and its surroundings. On display are, among other things, tools, cloth, books and maps of the Ruhr valley. The exhibition is meant to bridge to everyday life today, because people's lives were also reflected in everyday things in the past. In addition there is archive material and events such as lectures and a monthly Stammtisch (regulars' meeting).
