About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Ebermannstadt was founded in 1923 in the Old Town Hall for the 600th anniversary of the town's elevation. After several moves and interruptions, including during World War II, it reopened in 1973 in the Old Town Hall and in 1981 moved into the former district court. From the start it was run entirely by volunteers, from 1992 to 2022 under the direction of Dr. Manfred Franze; since 2022 a salaried museum coordinator has supplemented the museum advisory board.
The exhibition covers more than 1,000 years of local history, from the first documented mention in 981 through the town's elevation in 1323 to the destruction during the Hussite wars, the Peasants' War, the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars. The geology section shows ammonites, belemnites, the skeleton of a marine crocodile and the skull of a cave bear; jewelry, weapons and ceramics document the world of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.
Folk collections with costumes and everyday objects for cooking and laundry, as well as sections on brewing, crafts, emigration in the 19th century and the Nazi era, complement the display. The house also commemorates notable personalities of the town, including the sculptor Georg Friedrich Theiler and the butcher Johann Georg Lahner, to whom the invention of the Vienna sausage is attributed.
