About the museum
The painter Curt Herrmann (1854–1929) was born in Merseburg and grew up in Halle and Berlin. Through his marriage to Sophie Kohn he came to Pretzfeld Castle, where the family spent its summers. The castle, the park, the Wiesenttal valley and the people there inspired him to paint numerous pictures; a bronze plaque at the entrance gate commemorates this.
Herrmann was open to the currents of his time and found his calling in neo-impressionism. He is considered one of the earliest representatives of Impressionism in Germany and the first German neo-impressionist, and he was a friend of Henry van de Velde.
The castle passed into middle-class ownership in 1852 through the purchase by the Nuremberg merchant Joseph Kohn, whose granddaughter Sophie later married Herrmann. In 1973 a museum with paintings by Curt Herrmann was set up in the castle. It presents a representative cross-section of his work; the castle still belongs to the Herrmann family today. The museum is on the third floor and is accessible only on guided tours.
