About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Gemünden, in the Weilrod district of Gemünden, is located in the oldest building in the village, at the confluence of the Sattelbach and the Laubach. The solid lower floor was originally a late Gothic chapel, first mentioned in 1580; it is probably considerably older. Services were rarely held there, and in 1828 the dilapidated chapel was converted into the municipal bakehouse.
In 1948 the house received an additional floor and served as the town hall with the municipal treasury. After the 1972 municipal reform, the Landfrauenverein Gemünden (rural women's association) renovated the upper floor and set up the local history museum there. During further work in 1996, medieval wall paintings with scenes from the Old and New Testament came to light. In 2002, proceeds from the celebrations for the village's 600th anniversary went toward renovating the old slate roof.
The collection shows objects from house, yard, field and craft, including traces of the earlier flax cultivation such as a flax comb and spinning wheel, and an ox yoke. The bakehouse still bakes bread regularly today, following recipes from grandmothers' days.
