About the museum
The idea for a local history museum in Höchstadt was sparked in 1926 during a visit by the Historical Association of Bamberg. On May 26, 1929, the museum opened in a room of the former castle; in 1954 it moved into the Stadtturm (town tower). After the town council decided in 1983 to move the collection, it went into the vacant Storchenrathaus on Hauptstraße.
After extensive renovation, the building reopened in 2003, the town's anniversary year, in a partly redesigned form. Across three floors, 14 themed rooms now tell the story of the town's more than thousand-year history.
Main focuses are a large collection of baroque guild objects, including a Hobelspan banner of the carpenters and locksmiths, and Franconian carp farming, of which Höchstadt remains the center to this day. The museum also covers prehistory and early history, geology, household goods, popular piety with a wooden sculpture of Anna Selbdritt (Saint Anne with Mary and Jesus) from around 1510, and finds from the Roth sand pit near Gremsdorf, including mammoth and woolly rhinoceros bones.
