About the museum

According to the town archive's house register, a small Sölde (smallholding cottage, home of a small farmer who also practiced a trade) already stood on the site of today's Hartmannhaus in 1544. Later the house served as a farm, a shoemaker's workshop and the retirement house of a neighboring farm. It received its present name from the Hartmann family, whose last owner left the house to the town of Marktoberdorf on the condition that it be used for cultural and charitable purposes.

From 1980, the Heimatverein Marktoberdorf (local heritage association), with support from the town, set up a local history museum there. It showed wagons, tools, stable equipment and kitchenware, winter sports equipment, and a shoemaker's workshop, and it brought to life everyday life in the Oberdorf district 100 to 150 years ago. The Hans-Zacherl-Stadl, a barn built by volunteers in 2010, was used for museum festivals and museum education programs.

After a pest infestation, which has since been resolved, the collection had to be cleared out, and museum operations have been on hold since then. The farm garden and the farm parlor (Bauernstube) are still used for weddings, the needlework group and other events.
