About the museum
The Paul-Röder-Museum is part of the Städtische Museen (municipal museums) in the Martinsheim in Marktoberdorf and is devoted to the painter Paul Röder (1897–1962). Röder was born in Barmen, worked as a teacher and painter, and lived in various places in Germany before settling in Marktoberdorf in 1958. After a stay in Paris in 1927, his work shows clear traits of French Impressionism, which he brought to public attention in the Allgäu; he is regarded as one of the region's important artists.
The collection comprises around 70 works and offers a cross-section of his life's work, including landscapes, city views, portraits and still lifes. The museum also houses Röder's own collection of non-European weapons and tribal sculptures from Africa, Asia and Oceania.
The rooms are in the Martinsheim, which also houses the Stadtmuseum (town museum) and the Riesengebirgsmuseum (Giant Mountains Museum). The Paul-Röder collection is currently temporarily closed for inventory work.
