About the museum
The idea for a local history museum arose in the early 1980s, when new housing developments made Kinderhaus grow rapidly to some 16,000 residents. A lecture series at the adult education center gave rise to the "Stammtisch Kinderhaus" (Kinderhaus regulars' circle), whose history group showed the exhibition "Kinderhaus vor 3000 Jahren" (Kinderhaus 3,000 Years Ago) at the community center in 1984 – with archaeological finds and models built by pupils of the Waldschule.
In October 1986, the Bürgervereinigung Kinderhaus (Kinderhaus citizens' association) was founded as the sponsoring association; in 1988 a first local history exhibition opened in the former Uppenbergschule. When the lease on these rooms was terminated, the district council decided to give the museum space in the Pfründnerhaus (almshouse) on the grounds of the former leper hospital. After renovation by the volunteers themselves, the Heimatmuseum opened there in September 1993.
The collection ranges from Neolithic settlement traces through the Bronze Age and early Middle Ages to the district's more recent past. Furnished rooms include a shoemaker's workshop, a postwar classroom, a Westphalian living room, a loom room, and a room with devotional objects. Changing exhibitions in the attic, a nativity scene exhibition during Advent, and the association's talks and markets round out the offerings. The Lepramuseum (leprosy museum) is right next door.
