Heimatmuseum Kirchen
Local history museum on the industrial and everyday history of Kirchen an der Sieg – from locomotive building and ironworks to crafts and mining.
About the museum
The museum is run by the Kirchener Heimatverein, which emerged from a citizens' initiative in March 1984. The first collection pieces found room in a school hall before the association opened a Heimatstube (local history room) in the Bürgerhaus in Wehbach in October 1989.
In 1994, the collection moved to the former fire station on Wiesenstraße in Kirchen. After criticism of the presentation, the building was remodeled and redesigned from late 2001 for around 190,000 euros and reopened in May 2005; in 2007, a museum barn was added.
The focus is on the town's two big companies, the Arnold Jung locomotive factory and the Friedrichshütte in Wehbach, plus mining with a reconstructed mine tunnel section. Workshops of a blacksmith, shoemaker, and wheelwright, an old shop, living rooms from the early 20th century, and exhibits on Hauberg forestry tell of everyday life. Outside stand two small industrial locomotives, and the barn shows farm equipment.
