About the museum

The building probably dates from around 1780 and was initially a tannery. In 1897, sisters of the Order of the Merciful Sisters of the Holy Cross from Hegne were granted residence rights here; they worked in nursing and in the children's school and gave the house the name "Klösterle" (little convent). After they left in 1959, the town bought the house and rented it out as living space. Its condition deteriorated so badly that demolition was decided in the 1970s, before the decision to preserve it was made in 1978.

The friends' association Förderverein Klösterle was founded in 1985 to restore the building. The local history museum opened in 1988. It shows old documents and records, tools and everyday objects, and models that illustrate the work, daily life, customs and religion of earlier generations. Highlights include the bailiwick map (Vogteikarte) of 1773 and the former mechanical tower clock of the Protestant Bergkirche. A reading corner holds local history literature that can be borrowed free of charge. Since 1994, civil marriage ceremonies have also taken place in the Klösterle.
