Heimethus Todtmoos

Local history museum in a shingle-roofed Black Forest house from 1810 covering everyday life, crafts, glass carriers, and the pilgrimage history of Todtmoos.

Opening hoursAdmission from €3

About the museum

The Heimethus is an original, fully preserved High Black Forest house with a shingle roof and traditional ridge posts. Building surveys date it to 1810; well into the 20th century, two families lived and worked here under one roof. This makes it one of the few houses of this type to survive in the area.

The house opened as a local history museum in 1991. The local friends' association Förderverein Heimatmuseum und Geschichte handled the renovation and furnishing in countless hours of volunteer work. The contents come mainly from donations and loans by residents of Todtmoos and the surrounding area, as well as from the holdings of the Catholic parish.

A tour through the parlor with its tiled stove and devotional corner (Herrgottswinkel), the kitchen, bedrooms, and workshops brings life “auf dem Wald” (in the forest uplands) to life: cottage industries such as spinning and weaving, wood turners and Schnefler (wood carvers), farming and forestry, and the gingerbread trade. One room is devoted to the glass carriers and glassmaking in the Black Forest, while other sections cover the pilgrimage to Todtmoos and its history as a spa resort. Glassblowing demonstrations take place in the house's culture room, and civil weddings can be held in the parlor.
