About the museum
The Museum Kroppenstedt is in a half-timbered house on the Kirchhof, built in 1564 as a boys' school, within the historic ensemble of the Martinikirche, the Eulenturm (owl tower) and the former town walls. After the building stood empty for a long time and fell into disrepair, it was extensively renovated; the local history museum opened here in 1994.
Across about 260 square meters, many small rooms tell the story of Kroppenstedt as a town of "Reithufen" (plots of land granted to mounted men): its links to Corvey Abbey, medieval town privileges, the Freikreuz (free cross) as a symbol of town jurisdiction, and the Kroppenstedt riders, whose service lasted until 1727. Notable items include a riders' banner dated to 1689 and the silver goblet "Kroppenstedter Vorrat", which has a legend that the Brothers Grimm also recorded.
The house also shows everyday life and crafts of earlier times: a historical pharmacy, a classroom, farm tools and middle-class domestic culture. Parts of the Gröningen Castle, demolished in 1816, are preserved in the former classroom.
