About the museum

The Puschkin School in Oschersleben already had a school museum in GDR times. From 1984, teachers and pupils fitted out a former coal cellar, gathered exhibits and researched the history of schooling in the former district. The "Schulhistorisches Kabinett" (school history cabinet) opened on November 17, 1986, for the 90th anniversary of the school building.

During the extensive conversion and renovation of the old building from 2012, the collection had to be cleared out and was stored in a classroom. After the construction work was completed, the cellar rooms, with their preserved brick vaulting, were set up again as exhibition space. In 2018 the museum's friends' association was founded, and on September 8, 2019, the new school museum was officially opened.

The museum sees itself as a place to experience things hands-on: visitors sit in old school desks, leaf through historical textbooks and write on slate boards. The exhibition asks how everyday school life and learning methods have changed from the imperial era to today, and how learning will look in the future. It is complemented by a display on the history of the school's Spielmannszug (marching band) and a reading corner with children's and young people's literature. The friends' association is currently digitizing the collection.
