About the museum

The Lengsdorf local history museum is housed in the old village school on Lengsdorfer Hauptstraße. The two-story brick building was erected in 1836 and initially offered room for 108 children. When pupil numbers rose and a second school was built closer to the church, the building served as a community hall, later as accommodation for municipal staff and bombed-out families, and until 1979 as social housing. In 1988 the city of Bonn had the building renovated.

The core of the collection was laid by farmer and local historian Heinrich Henseler. In the early 1960s, during earthworks for the motorway, he came upon Roman finds, and afterwards he collected objects from local history for decades. After his death, his daughter left the pieces on loan to the Heimat- und Verschönerungsverein (local heritage and beautification association), which set up the museum from them. It opened on September 17, 1988.

Later, Lengsdorf residents added further exhibits to the holdings. In 2012, finds from a Roman barrel well (Fassbrunnen), discovered during work at the Lengsdorf brickworks, were added; they are a permanent loan from the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn. The association runs the museum voluntarily to this day and, alongside the permanent exhibition, also shows special exhibitions, lectures and excursions.
