About the museum

The former city museum of Lichtenfels was housed in a former director's villa on Bamberger Straße. It documented the geography, the basket trade and the railway line important to the town, and held the largest known collection of Schneyer porcelain. Since 2023 these holdings have been displayed in the Stadtschloss.

The town of Lichtenfels acquired the Stadtschloss in 1970 and reopened it in 1991, after more than fifteen years of construction and restoration work. Today it serves as a venue for conferences, celebrations and cultural events, and at the same time houses the municipal collections.

On the attic floor, the collections on the history of beer and brewing, the railway and the basket trade can be seen; in the gallery is the Schneyer porcelain. There is also a fresco room, and in the Rittersaal (knights' hall) special exhibitions rotate.
