About the museum
The municipal museum has existed for more than a hundred years and is today located on Kirchplatz, next to the parish church of St. Kilian. According to the town, the breadth of its subjects makes it one of the more significant museums in Bavaria.
One focus is the arithmetic master Adam Ries(e), who was born in Staffelstein in 1492. Visitors can follow “Rechnen auf den Linien” (“calculating on the lines”), from which the saying “nach Adam Riese” (meaning “by correct calculation”) originates. The archaeology section “Wir gehen mit der Zeit” (“We Move with the Times”) shows finds from the surrounding area, including a Hallstatt-period footed bowl from Prächting, and documents human life over roughly eleven millennia. A separate section is dedicated to the poet Victor von Scheffel, who wrote the Frankenlied in 1859 during a longer stay at Kloster Banz. The museum also has an extensive collection of fossils and minerals, as well as areas on religious life, porcelain and local history.
