About the museum
The Löffingen artist and vocational school teacher Karl Ehret assembled an extensive collection on local history, which from 1935 was on view in a local history room (Heimatstube) in the school. The war years took their toll, and in 1975 a break-in led to the theft of, among other things, Roman coins that had been found near Löffingen. The roots of the collection go back to a museum society founded in 1846.
Since 1990, the collection has been housed in a building erected by the town. On display are minerals and fossils from the Wutach Gorge, mammoth teeth from the gravel pit in Reiselfingen, an Alemannic grave, medieval weapons and helmets, a fire engine pump cart from 1806, and farm furniture, tools and household goods. Reverse-glass paintings by the painter Winterhalder from Rötenbach, and paintings by local artists, complete the display.
