Heimatmuseum Lütgendortmund
Local history museum in the forecourt building of the moated castle Haus Dellwig on everyday life, crafts, and mining in Lütgendortmund in the early 20th century.
About the museum
The museum is based at the moated castle Haus Dellwig in western Dortmund. The knight's manor was first documented in 1179 and changed hands several times through marriage, inheritance, and sale before the Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG mining company acquired it in 1904. Since 1978 the complex has belonged to the City of Dortmund, which had the castle restored.
At the initiative of Heinz Jander, the association Verein Heimatmuseum Lütgendortmund was founded in June 1988. In early 1989 the museum moved into the former farmworkers' apartment in the eastern forecourt building. Over the following years, the threshing floor, horse stable, and parts of the cowshed were added; the conversions were carried out largely by association members themselves and financed through membership fees and donations. A community room with a bar was also created in the former cowshed.
Today the volunteer-run museum shows more than 1,000 objects, mostly from the first half of the 20th century, in six rooms covering over 450 square meters. Re-created workshops present trades such as baker, blacksmith, saddler, shoemaker, and carpenter; there are also a kitchen, a parlor, a hair salon, office machines, items from local companies, and exhibits on mining and community club life in the district. A spring festival and an autumn festival frame the season.
