About the museum
The building on Bartholomäusstraße was erected in 1905 by the then still independent municipality of Sandhofen as a children's, trade and cooking school; today it also houses a kindergarten and primary school classes. In October 1980 the museum moved into three living rooms formerly used by the children's school sisters; after renovations, the entire space could be used as a museum from 1982.
In 2005 the permanent exhibition "Lebensart in den 50er Jahren" (Lifestyle in the 1950s) was added in the loft, and in 2014 "Kinderträume" (Children's Dreams) followed, with toys from yesterday to today. The museum is affiliated with the Zeitgeschichtliches Museum (Contemporary History Museum), opened in 2011 in the former Sandhofen bunker. The house is run by a private association; the City of Mannheim provides the rooms, and the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen provide advice.
The tour begins with prehistory and early history, documented by finds from the Neolithic onward, and mentions Sandhofen's first written mention in the Lorsch Codex of 888. Further rooms recall the town's destruction three times in the 17th century and show living conditions around 1900, as well as tools from the cigar, paper and jute industries and local crafts.
