About the museum
From September 1944 to March 1945, a subcamp of the Natzweiler concentration camp existed in the former Friedrichschule, today's Gustav-Wiederkehr-Schule. Up to 1,070 prisoners were held there, almost all Polish men and boys who had been arrested after the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising and brought to Mannheim via Dachau. They had to perform forced labor for Daimler-Benz.
After the war, the camp was forgotten. The Stadtjugendring (city youth council) drew attention to its existence again in 1979; after fierce debate, the municipal council unanimously decided in October 1987 to establish a memorial at the authentic site. The city archive, today the MARCHIVUM, took over the academic direction of the concept.
The exhibition in the basement of the school opened on November 12, 1990; in 1991 the sponsoring association KZ-Gedenkstätte Sandhofen e.V. was founded. The permanent exhibition documents the history of the subcamp as part of the Nazi concentration camp system, informs about the Warsaw Uprising and commemorates the victims. Besides the Sunday openings, the association offers group tours and educational programs, used mainly by school classes.
