The museum goes back to the Marne skat club, founded in 1873. For the club, the Kiel architect Wilhelm Voigt built a house of its own in 1905, where members housed their collection of curiosities. After the town took over the building, the skat club museum was established there in 1928. The Institute for Folklore of Kiel University reorganized the art-historical and local history collection between 1977 and 1979, and in 1990 the building was extended, creating space for exhibitions and events such as weddings.
The collection shows life in the parish of Marne, in the town and in the Köge (reclaimed marshland). Important parts are the prehistoric Hartmann collection with finds from the Shell Mound culture (Muschelhaufenkultur), the Neolithic, and the Bronze and Iron Ages; a weapons collection; and the skat club's collection. The cultural history section contains rural and middle-class furniture, stoneware, faience, porcelain, silver, jewelry, textiles, folk prints and fittings from the old Marne church. Further topics are dike building and trade links with the Netherlands, as well as parts of a large coin collection and photographs by Thomas Backens.
