About the museum

Meuselwitz’s local history collection goes back to the teacher and town chronicler Heinrich Meyer, who assembled its core around 1920. From 1966 to 1983 the local history museum was housed in the old Schnaudermühle, a 16th-century mill building that later fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1988. After that, the holdings were initially kept in temporary storage.

From 1993, members of the local heritage, environmental and nature conservation society reorganized the collection and showed it temporarily in a former daycare nursery. At the same time, the half-timbered ensemble at Neugasse 1/3 – a former weaver’s house from around 1700 and one of the oldest houses in town – received emergency stabilization in 1993 and was converted from late 1994. The new museum opened there on December 6, 1996.

The tour is organized by theme: the noble von Seckendorff family and their significance for the town, urban development, crafts, trades and clubs, lignite mining along with prehistoric and early historic finds, industry including mechanical engineering and textile processing, and the outlying villages and the Altenburger Land region. The heritage society and donors continually add to the collection.
