About the museum
The Heimatmuseum is located in the Obertor (upper gate) of Mittelbuchen, Alte Rathausstraße 31, a remnant of the town fortifications from the 15th century. The gate initially served as a defensive tower; in 1828 the gatehouse between the Obertor and the Säuturm (sow tower) was built into the wall, and from about 1835 to 1982 it was used as a residence by the municipality. The property then fell into disrepair.
The Mittelbuchener Heimat- und Geschichtsverein (local heritage and history association), founded in 1991, converted the Obertor into a museum partly through volunteer work and partly with support from the City of Hanau; the opening was on May 16, 1998. Today the city and the association run the house together.
On the first floor, finds from about 6,000 years of settlement in the Büchertal valley are shown, from the Linear Pottery culture to the Franconian settlers. On the second floor and in the medieval tower rooms, the themes are rural ceramics, church, parish and school, costume, Wilhelmsbad, cider, and the workplace of a diamond cutter. When the weather is good, the neighboring Säuturm, with its 42 steps, is open.
