About the museum
The Old Post Office next to the town hall in Mücheln was converted into an information center for the Geiseltal, meant to keep the region's former mining in memory and to link the old town more closely to the Geiseltal Lake. The building was handed over for its new purpose on October 3, 2010; the town information office is on the ground floor.
On July 5, 2012, the regional museum opened on the upper floors. Across several levels, it covers the geological foundations of the Geiseltal, the famous fossils from the lignite deposit, the history of mining, and the history of Mücheln. A replica of a Chirotherium footprint leads from the harbor at the marina into the old town and ends at the museum entrance.
