Bauernmuseum Alte Burgschäferei
Farm museum in the historic sheep farm below Querfurt Castle with farm machinery, a furnished farmhouse and farm animals.
About the museum
The Alte Burgschäferei lies at the foot of Querfurt Castle. An inventory of the castle from 1498 mentions it for the first time as a sheep farm in front of the castle; it was one of the farming operations that supplied the castle's inhabitants with food.
The ensemble grew over several centuries: in the 18th century a coach house was added to the historic sheep barn on the south side, and the single-story residential building received its half-timbered gable in the 1930s. The complex is now a listed monument.
As a farm museum, the sheep farm belongs to Querfurt Castle, which is run by the Saalekreis district. On display are tools, vehicles and machines from about 150 years of agriculture – from sleds and carriages to a steam engine and Lanz Bulldog tractors and an early combine harvester made in the GDR. A furnished farmhouse and a shop give an insight into everyday rural life in the 1930s, and further areas are devoted to crafts such as blacksmith, butcher and shepherd.
The museum also includes a farm garden and enclosures with farm animals, including donkeys, which recall a legend of the castle. During school holidays and project days, children learn old craft techniques here.
