About the museum
The Heimatverein Philippsburg (local heritage society) was founded on May 29, 1924. The occasions were the 300th anniversary celebration of the town's renaming in 1923 and the first local heritage day in May 1924. Its tasks include local heritage and monument preservation, lectures, excursions and running the local history museum.
The town's current museum on Kronenwerkstraße, at the corner of Alte Kirchenstraße, was officially opened on November 24, 2013. It is run by the local heritage society on a voluntary basis and is open only on individual dates.
The exhibition covers the history of the town and its fortress, including engravings of the Philippsburg fortress. A separate room recalls the year 1938, when the town celebrated its 600th anniversary and, at the same time, the persecution of the Jewish population took place. In the cellar, gold panning in the Rhine meadows is shown; it was a side occupation until the 1930s. In a workshop, belt-driven machines run, some of which come from a local bicycle workshop. In the courtyard stand, among other things, an edge section of the cooling tower of the Philippsburg nuclear power plant, the keystone of the former “Weißes Tor” (White Gate) and an old Nepomuk statue.
