About the museum

The building on Kirchstraße was erected between 1898 and 1900 as the town hall of the then independent municipality of Wiesental. After the municipal merger and the construction of a new town hall in Waghäusel, the town made the rooms available to the Heimatverein Wiesental, founded in 1981.

In the upper floors the association set up the local history museum through many hours of volunteer work; it opened in October 1989. Since then the association has continuously looked after, changed and expanded the exhibitions, which cover around 450 square meters. A second, smaller collection is shown by the association in the Heimatstube on the Wagbachstraße, which opened in 1984.

The displays range from prehistory and experimental archaeology through the Roman period, with the Wagbachkastell and the Römerstraße, to local history, schools, churches and clubs. Work and occupations form a special focus: tobacco growing and cigar making, crafts, agriculture and a general store. In addition, changing special exhibitions are held.
