Deutsches Straßenmuseum
Museum in the arsenal of the Germersheim fortress on the history of road, bridge, and tunnel construction – from plank road to autobahn.
About the museum
The Deutsches Straßenmuseum was founded in 1989 on the private initiative of road builders. It is the only museum in Germany to cover the subject of roads comprehensively and is based in the listed former arsenal of the Bavarian fortress of Germersheim, built in the 19th century. It is run by an association and funded with support from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as through donations and membership fees.
Across some 5,000 square meters indoors and outdoors, the museum shows more than 500 exhibits on the development of the road from beaten path to modern highway: an original plank road around 2,000 years old, historic tools and construction sites, surveying instruments, laboratory equipment, models of engineering structures, and, outside, large machines such as road rollers and asphalt pavers.
With funding from the EU's LEADER program, the exhibition was redesigned in the project “Die Straße. Verbindet” (The Road. Connects). The new section on bridge and tunnel construction, surveying, and engineering professions, featuring the interactive “Science Street,” opened on December 22, 2025, and has been open to all visitors since January 2026. Since then, the museum has been open every day of the week with no closing day.
