About the museum
The Rauchkate is an old Lower Saxon farmhouse built around 1600 at the eastern entrance to the village of Neuenburg. Farmers from the surrounding area brought sausages, bacon and ham there to be smoked over the open hearth; people and livestock lived under one roof.
As early as 1908, an initiative formed to preserve the house as evidence of earlier building methods; in 1909 a separate association was founded that bought the cottage. Around 1950 it passed to the Heimatverein Neuenburg. In 1964 the cottage and outbuildings were moved to their present site in the Neuenburg castle park, and have served as a local history museum ever since.
Besides the Rauchkate, the ensemble includes the Bischüür barn, the Friesenscheune (Frisian barn), the bakehouse with a wood-fired stone oven and the draw well. Displayed are tools and everyday objects of farm life, especially relating to the making, preparation and preservation of food. The grounds host baking days, summer tea evenings and a small Christmas market.
