About the museum
The Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Friedeburg was founded on 30 January 1963. Since 1983 it has run the Heimatkundliches Museum, where members collect and present the history of the town and its surroundings.
The museum is housed in the farm section of an old East Frisian Gulfhaus. The brick building under a half-hipped roof, whose living quarters with sash windows date from the first half of the 19th century, is a listed monument and also serves the municipality as a community and guest house with a tourist information office.
The exhibition deals with the history of Friedeburg Castle, the monasteries of Reepsholt and Hopels, and the Frisian Heerweg. Further topics are the development of Friedeburg up to the present day and prehistoric archaeological finds from the surrounding area. The museum includes a farmhouse garden.
