About the museum
The local history museum is in Rehburg, a district of Rehburg-Loccum west of the Steinhuder Meer lake, and is run on a volunteer basis by the Bürger- und Heimatverein Rehburg (citizens' and local heritage association). It tells the story of the village, from a medieval border fortification, whose pile foundations are dated to 1259, through its rise as a royal spa resort in the 18th century, to the town hall in a former noble seat.
The core of the exhibition consists of finds and replicas from the region: a Bronze Age spearhead from a gravel pit on the Weser, the head of a giant deer, the lower jaw of a mammoth, a medieval helmet found during canal works on the site of the former Rehburg castle, and a replica of the Winzlar hanging bowl (Hängebecken), a Bronze Age grave find from 1969. A Schaumburg dagger, which is said to have been lost in a skirmish in front of the castle around 1320, has been on display since 2014.
In addition, there are hand-painted guild banners, costumes, and farm equipment and everyday objects from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors who wish can call up an audio guide at the display cases by scanning a QR code.
