About the museum
The insect museum in Steinhude opened on April 1, 2000, with official state recognition. The town of Wunstorf had provided a building for it in 1999. Two years later, the free-flight hall for tropical butterflies was added. Behind the house is a family that researched insects in Asia for years, described species, and wanted to make its knowledge generally accessible; the family also runs the Schmetterlingsfarm in Trassenheide on Usedom.
The offering consists of the tropical hall, where butterflies from South America, Africa, and Asia fly freely among orchids, hibiscus, and banana plants; the Puppenstube, where butterflies emerge from their chrysalises; the insect museum with a worldwide cross-section of butterflies, beetles, arachnids, and other insects; and the insectarium with live large insects, stick insects, tarantulas, and scorpions. An insect cinema, a dark cabinet with zodiac columns, and a shop round out the visit.
