About the museum

The local history museum stands on Dorfstraße in Rodewald, directly next to the Binderhaus, and was formerly a doctor's practice. As a listed building, it was comprehensively renovated in 2022 and 2023: timber-frame beams were partly replaced, the infill panels (Gefache) were re-bricked and re-pointed, the interior walls were given clay plaster, and the windows, doors and roof were repaired. The project was funded, among others, by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung (Lower Saxony savings bank foundation), the Bingo-Umweltstiftung (Bingo environmental foundation), the Landschaftsverband Weser-Hunte (regional association) and the municipality of Rodewald; members of the Heimat- und Museumsverein (local heritage and museum association) helped clear out and re-furnish the rooms.

The exhibition shows how people lived, worked and went about their daily lives a little over a hundred years ago: with an old classroom, a furnished pharmacy and a dental practice, as well as crafts and trades, medical care, natural history and finds from the surrounding area. A separate display is devoted to the "Würger vom Lichtenmoor", a wolf shot near Rodewald in 1948; its head is on permanent loan from the Landesmuseum Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony State Museum).
