About the museum
The village smithy of Helstorf was in operation from 1889 to 1965. Today it is under heritage protection and forms the core of the Hufschmiedemuseum (farrier museum). Its workshop equipment and tools are preserved, so the farrier's craft becomes vivid.
In 1988 the Heimat- und Museumsverein Helstorf (local heritage and museum association) was founded to preserve the old smithy and cultivate rural customs. Next to the smithy is a museum barn, which displays looms and spinning wheels, a farmhouse kitchen, a cobbler's workshop, an old painter's workshop and a dugout canoe. In a new machine hall, the association shows old agricultural implements and machines that its members maintain. On Smithy Days a farrier demonstrates his craft, and there are weaving demonstrations and homemade cake; other dates include a flea market and a potato festival.
