About the museum
The Heimatmuseum of the Heimatverein Saerbeck is located on the upper floor of the “Alte Dorfschule” (Old Village School). The building was erected between 1904 and 1906, with three classrooms on the ground floor and a teacher's apartment above; classes were held here until July 1984. In 1983 the municipal council voted against demolition, and in 1986 and 1987 the house was renovated with urban development funds from the state.
Today the building serves cultural purposes: the ground floor houses the Catholic public library and a workroom of the Heimatverein. The museum focuses on the history of Saerbeck. Archaeological finds reach back to the late Ice Age; craft and farm tools from the 18th to 20th centuries tell of clog-making, linen production and butter making, as well as the open hearth fire in farmhouses, from a time when there was neither central heating nor chest freezers.
The Heimatverein also runs the Kornbrennerei-Museum (grain distillery museum) at Grevener Straße 8, which has existed since 1998.
