About the museum
The Kornbrennerei Dalmöller-Niehaus in Saerbeck was founded in 1812 by Ferdinand Kaspar Dalmöller. For more than 160 years, it operated as an agricultural side business in which grain was distilled into Doppelkorn; the operation ended in 1976. Of three distilleries once in the village, it is the only one that has been preserved in full.
In 1992, the Heimatverein (local heritage association) Saerbeck acquired the listed buildings. After a comprehensive restoration that began in 1994, the museum opened in March 1998. It is guided by the motto "Vom Korn zum Korn" and combines historic preservation, documentation of rural life, and modern presentation techniques. The neighboring Tantenhaus serves the Heimatverein as its club headquarters.
On display is distilling equipment from the first half of the 20th century, which shows the path from grain to spirits. During guided tours, the association's distillery guides explain the history of the house and the distilling process, and the visit ends with a tasting. In 2021, a new sales room for regional beverages, books, and brochures was created. Since its opening, more than 10,000 guests have visited the museum.
