About the museum
Around 1600 the museum’s building served as an administrative office. It was destroyed in the great town fire of 1690 and rebuilt as a town hall with a ballroom and a Ratskeller. From 1835 to 1945 it was a district court; later it housed, among other things, the employment office, a trade union office, part of the school, a kindergarten, a library and a pensioners’ club, and for a time also a local history museum with a town archive.
Since 1995 the listed building has once again housed the local history museum’s collection. It tells of the first documentary mention of Schalkau, of the close ties with Schaumburg Castle and the families who ruled there over time, and gives an insight into the economic development of the region.
On display are finds from the site of Schaumburg Castle, documents and mementos, a farmhouse parlour with household goods, products of the former toy industry, wood carvings, and models and drawings by pupils and teachers of the technical school founded in 1881, along with traditional costumes and clothing of past times.
