About the museum

The museum has its roots in the Coburger Glaspreis (Coburg Glass Prize), which the Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg first launched in 1977 as an international competition for modern glass. Many of the works shown there entered the collections; further competitions followed in 1985, 2006, 2014 and 2022, each significantly expanding the holdings.

In 1989 a first display was set up in the orangery of Schloss Rosenau, considered an early specialist museum for modern glass in Central Europe. When space ran out, a new building designed by Albert Wagner was built opposite the orangery, with major support from the entrepreneur Otto Waldrich and the foundation he established. The new museum, with around 1,260 square meters of exhibition space, opened in 2008.

Today the collection comprises about 1,400 objects: from artistically designed functional glass to sculptures and large-scale installations, complemented by a study collection of modern ceramics in the basement and a lampworking studio. In 2026 the Losch Collection, featuring works by the Venetian designer Fulvio Bianconi, was added as a new permanent section. The museum is a branch of the Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg; the building is managed by the Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (Bavarian Palace Administration).
