Miniature models and VW toys tell the story of the brand and show how design, technology and everyday life of the time are reflected in toys; with play space on the theme of mobility.
About the museum
The museum in the "Bavarian Doll Town" of Neustadt bei Coburg sees itself above all as a technical museum of the industrial culture of dolls and toys. Its focus is the pre-industrial and industrial development of products, materials, techniques and trades over roughly 250 years, as well as the living and working conditions of home workers and factory workers and the interplay of trade and politics. It also shows that play is a basic need in all cultures.
On the ground floor visitors meet craft trades such as turners, metal spinners, cardboard embossers and papier-mâché casters. On the upper floor the focus is on finishing work by doll-head painters, eye-setters, and dressmakers, shoemakers and hatmakers for dolls. A special feature is the costume doll collection: from the 1930s onward, dolls were made in Neustadt specifically for this collection and sent around the world to be dressed in national festive costumes. Today around 800 dolls from over 100 countries are on display.
In the basement you will find Santa's workshop, fairy-tale scenes, Max and Moritz and the Hausser Zoo. Since April 2017 the museum has been run by the Zweckverband "Museen im Coburger Land" (Museums in the Coburg Land association), together with the Gerätemuseum des Coburger Landes (equipment museum of the Coburg Land) in Ahorn.
