About the museum

The roots of the Sonnewalde local history museum lie in exhibitions on the history of the Counts of Solms-Sonnenwalde in 1993. This led to the idea of a museum on town history: the district council created the basis in January 1995 with job creation measures (ABM), and on June 3, 1995, the first town history exhibition opened in the former dental practice rooms in the Vorderschloss.

In the following years more rooms were added: a classroom in the style of earlier times documenting about 500 years of school history, rooms on the rule of the Counts of Solms-Sonnenwalde, and a fully furnished apartment in the style of the early 20th century. Further rooms are available for changing exhibitions. Across about 300 square meters, around 20 rooms show town history, buildings and changing ruling families, as well as everyday life, office work and typical crafts such as woodworking and shoemaking.

Of the former castle complex, the Vorderschloss with its 16th-century Renaissance portal has survived. The Förderverein Museum und Schlossareal Sonnewalde e.V. (friends of the museum and castle grounds) looks after the museum and the adjoining park.
