About the museum

The local history museum is in the so-called Oldest House (Ältestes Haus) of Teltow at Hoher Steinweg 13. After the devastating town fire of 1711, the barber-surgeon Johann Christoph Bürger had the house rebuilt, as an inscription above the door records; the half-timbered construction on the upper floor is considered the oldest surviving building fabric in the town. Around 1800 a stone extension was added. Later craftsmen used the house, for example with a nail forge and a smithy, and from 1926 to 1965 there was a tobacco shop here.

The Heimatverein Stadt Teltow 1990 e.V. restored the listed house in the 1990s and opened the museum there in 1994. On around 100 square meters, the exhibition shows the town's history from first settlement to 1945: from Bronze Age finds through the town rights of 1265 and the Teltow turnips (Teltower Rübchen) to industrialization. It includes a kitchen and a living room in the Gründerzeit style, as well as historic tools of various crafts. An extension to the present day is planned.

The museum has a second location: the exhibition Historische Waschtechnik (historic laundry technology) at Ritterstraße 14 shows the development of laundry care from the washtub to the washing machine.
