About the museum
The local history museum on Maingasse shows, across three rooms, how Stockstadt am Main developed from prehistory to industrialization. The first room spans from the New Stone Age and the Urnfield period, through the first document of 1024, to the beginnings of industry in 1898. On display are, among other things, a harvest sickle, stone axes, a sword and references to the former Mainz customs station.
The second room is devoted to Roman Stockstadt. The display cases hold pottery finds from the fort and the civilian settlement, including jugs, plates and decorated terra sigillata. Models of the fort and its gate, of houses, of a potter's wheel and of a cremation grave, as well as dedication stones and the equipment of an auxiliary soldier, illustrate life along the Limes.
The third room is devoted to the cellulose and paper factory. When the factory was built in 1898, the Roman fort was discovered; the engineer Karl Wirth recognized the significance of the find and documented it. An excavation in 1990 uncovered a whole pottery district with several kilns on the same spot. From this, the museum puts at its center the idea of "1900 years of production on the same site": pottery in the past, paper manufacturing today.
