About the museum
Treffurt already had a local history museum at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1982 it has been housed in the historic Trottscher Hof, the medieval seat of the Trott family at the former Burschla Gate. The museum was extended in 2003, after the school had moved into a new building.
Today the exhibition is spread over four floors, from the cellar to the attic. It tells the story of the town, presents local figures, among them the educator and textbook author Friedrich Polack, whose study has been preserved, and explains the history of Normannstein Castle and of the Ganerbschaft, the shared-inheritance arrangement that divided the town into three parts. Other themes are traditional Werra ceramics, the regional geology and the local cigar industry. Under the roof there is a shoemaker’s workshop from 1920, in the basement a large kitchen with antique utensils, and in the vaulted cellar a complete wheelwright’s workshop.
