About the museum
St. Mary's Church in the Mühlhausen old town has the highest church tower in Thuringia and is visible far beyond the town limits. Since 1975 the building, no longer used as a place of worship, has been a museum as well as a concert hall and a memorial site of the Reformation era. It is closely tied to Thomas Müntzer, the radical reformer who preached here; a section in the chapels is dedicated to him.
The exhibition "Von Einhörnern und Drachentötern" shows valuable medieval altarpieces and sculptures from Thuringia in the side aisles and beside the altar; it is scheduled to run until October 31, 2030. The permanent exhibition "Aufgetürmt – Die Baugeschichte von St. Marien" documents the construction and restoration of the church, including an exhibition in the tower.
The tower is accessible only by stairs; a digital information point on the ground floor offers impressions of the tower exhibition. An audio guide with its own children's tour accompanies visitors through the building, which belongs to the Mühlhäuser Museen association.
