About the museum
The Peasants' War Museum is housed in the Kornmarktkirche, the former monastery church of the Franciscans, known as St. Crucis. It is one of the most important surviving mendicant church buildings in Germany. It was deconsecrated in 1802; since 1975 it has been used as a museum and also serves as a venue for concerts and conferences.
In the nave, the permanent exhibition "Reformation und Rebellion: Mühlhausen und der Bauernkrieg" covers the early Reformation and the Peasants' War in Thuringia. A second exhibition in the crypt traces the eventful building and restoration history of the church. Texts are available in German and English.
Outside, a cloister garden laid out after medieval models and a lapidarium with architectural fragments from historic buildings invite visitors to linger. A carillon rings from the church tower daily at 12:00 and 18:00. The building belongs to the Mühlhäuser Museen association, which also includes the Kulturhistorisches Museum, the Museum St. Marien and the Historische Wehranlage.
